Nagi Tibetan Nunnery

Tucked in the Shivapuri National Forest just north of Kathmandu, the Nagi Tibetan Nunnery is home to over 200 nuns, ages 4 to 90, who have devoted their lives to the study and practice of Buddhist teachings. Some choose this path as young as 13, describing it not as a decision, but a calling, one they approach with remarkable discipline and intention. Their days are highly structured, beginning at 5:30am and ending around 10pm with study and practice.

During my time there in April 2026, the nuns explored photography—something entirely new to them. Their approach was slow, thoughtful, and deeply connected to mindfulness, making them incredibly intuitive photographers.

The images that follow were all taken by the nuns themselves, offering a rare and intimate glimpse into their world, as seen through their eyes.
